Selling food from a temporary food stall at events such as markets, festivals and fetes may require a food business licence.
There are a number of exemptions for charitable and community organisations, for example a local sporting club holding a sausage sizzle. A fact sheet (pdf) has been developed specifically for fundraising events.
To find out more information about who needs a licence and how to apply visit the regional toolbox web site.
Council also has a Temporary Food Stall Licensing and Operation Guideline (pdf) for individuals, businesses, charities and community organisations involved in the operation of temporary food stalls. It provides the structural and operational guidelines to assist stall operators to produce food that is safe to eat. Even though a licence may not be required, you still have a responsibility to ensure the sale of safe and suitable food and an obligation to comply with the Food Safety Standards Code.
Completed application forms (pdf) must be made at least three days prior to the temporary food event to allow for the application to be considered and processed. If approval has not been granted prior to the event you will not be allowed to operate.
