Stormwater network
Council maintains 924km of stormwater pipe, 20km of lined stormwater channel and 38,006 stormwater structures. The network of drains, channels and floodways has been designed and built by Council to manage and direct the increase in stormwater run-off from urban development.
Council currently spends over $1.0 million per annum, upgrading its drainage network through Council's Master Drainage Program, to further improve the stormwater drainage network.
If you discover any problems with the condition of any of Council's stormwater assets please contact Logan Works on 3412 5436.
Master Drainage Program
To upgrade the city's drainage network in accordance with adopted standards, Council has established a Master Drainage Program for works to be undertaken throughout the city under its Ten Year Capital Roadworks and Drainage Program. Projects listed on this program undergo extensive investigation and detailed computer modelling and are prioritised on a cost/benefit ratio basis.
To obtain more information regarding the Master Drainage Program or projects listed under the program please contact the Roads & Drainage Infrastructure Management branch on 3412 5282.
Maintenance of drains and gullies
Council regularly cleans all drainage structures of silt, vegetation rubbish and debris that will affect the flow of water within the drainage network. These activities can be divided into two categories, open drain cleaning and the cleaning of gullies, pits and pipes.
Open drain cleaning
This activity covers all open drainage structures including lined and unlined open drains, spoon drains, table drains and waterways. These drains would typically be cleaned with mechanical means as required to remove obstructions from the waterway.
Cleaning gullies, pits and pipes
This activity covers the clearing of all stormwater drainage structures located within the road and drainage reserves. These include all types, such as gully pit inlets with or without grate, side entry pits, connections from inlets to the main drain, culverts and flow dissipaters. These drains are normally cleaned by mechanical suction or by hand to remove accumulated debris and vegetation obstructing the flow of water.
Enquiries regarding the cleaning of all drainage structures within Council's road and drainage reserves should be directed to Logan Works on 3412 5436.
Run-off from the road reserve
Council's drainage network has been designed to handle the majority of storm events. In design terms, it has the capacity to adequately handle a 1:50 storm event, i.e. a storm event that would on average occur only every 50 years.
However, often debris blocking drains or work carried out in the area since the design, may have reduced the drainage network's capacity to remove the stormwater from the roadway. In this event, water may enter private property directly from the road reserve. Should this event occur and damage is sustained to private property, Council may reinstate the property to its former condition.
Should you require remedial action due to these events, please contact Logan Works on 3412 5436.
If you do not sustain damage to your property it is still suggested that you notify Council. We may be able to correct the problem and prevent this event from re-occurring. In this instance please contact Logan Techservices on 3412 5415.
