2009 Queensland Safer Communities "Highly Commended" Award

Council received a "Highly Commended" award in the 2009 Queensland Safer Communities Awards for our Mobile Safety Camera Program. The Honourable Neil Roberts MP, Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Emergency Services presented the award.

The Australian Safer Communities Awards are recognised by the Australian Government Attorney-General's Department in conjunction with the State and Territories. These awards recognise best practice and innovation by organisations and individuals that help build safer communities across Australia.

The mobile safety camera program is an innovative feature Councils crime prevention and community safety program and is unique in its technical composition, community safety capacity and in the relationship that with we have been able to establish and develop over time with the Queensland Police Services in the City. 

Queensland Local Government Australian Service Excellence Award 2008/09

Council has won the Queensland local Government category of the Australian Service Excellence Awards for 2008/2009, presented by the Customer Service Institute of Australia.

Councils focus over the past 18 months has been around the challenges presented by Local Government Boundary Reform, i.e. how to meet these challenges on a day to day basis while being staying focused on progressing and growing our new business.

This is the first year Logan has been nominated for this award and this achievement is a great recognition of the effort and commitment shown by Council staff during this time.

Sister Cities Australia National Youth Project Award 2009

The tour won the 2009 Sister Cities Australia National Youth Project Award in July, presented in recognition of a significant youth project encouraging and stimulating youth participation in the sister cities program.

LYME was invited to perform at the 2008 International Friendship Cities Youth Music Concert by Hirakata City. The event proved to be an invaluable initiative, providing cultural and educational insights for the 35 students involved.

LYME performed with the local Hirakata Brass Band and traditional music groups from Hirakata's sister cities in China and South Korea during the event. It is estimated that 10,000 people viewed the performances, held over two weeks.

The 2008 Logan Youth Music Exchange (LYME) tour of Hirakata City, Japan, has received a national award.

Gallery and Museum Achievement Awards (GAMAA) 2008

Logan Art Gallery was awarded a Special Commendation in conjunction with Redcliffe City Art Gallery for their joint nomination, Blast! The influence of Manga and contemporary Japanese culture on Australian artists exhibition, at the Gallery and Museum Achievement Awards (GAMAA) 2008 in the category for "Organisations: Staff of up to 6".

The exhibition successfully engaged youth from both regions, helping to create stronger links with younger audiences through relevant content and innovative public programs, and addressed inclusiveness of local Japanese communities and encouraged an understanding of their unique culture within the wider public.

Healthy Cities Awards 2008

World Health Organisation Healthy Cities Good Practice Award

Council has won the World Health Organisation Healthy Cities Good Practice Award in the category of Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Planning at the Alliance for Healthy Cities Conference in Ichikawa, Japan.

This award recognises Council's Disaster Management Plan, particularly the Public Health and Welfare sub-plan.

Innovation Award for Creative Development in Healthy Cities

This award was presented to Council in recognition of the Eat, Play, Live Well Logan program implemented across Logan in the past 12-18 months with funding assistance from the Queensland Government.

Heart Foundation Local Government Awards 2008

Heart FoundationCouncil received two awards at the recent Heart Foundation Local Government Awards 2008 for its Eat Play Live Well Logan program and for the popular McDonald's® School Holiday Sports program.

The Eat Play Live Well Logan (EPLWL) initiative received the State Category Winner award for programs that improve heart health in priority groups.

EPLWL was a free pilot program aimed at providing fun fitness sessions in parks and healthy eating activities in community centres to promote the government's ''Go for 2 & 5'' fruit and vegetable program and ''Find your 30'' minutes of activity a day. More than 4,000 people in the community took part.

The initiative was funded by the Queensland Government - Community Partnership Grants 2007, Community Renewal and Logan City Council.

EPLWL complements the Queensland Government's ''Eat Well Be Active'' program.

A hit with parents and children, the popular McDonald's® School Holiday Sports program was awarded the State/Territory Highly Commended Award.

The program is offered at InSports Cornubia and five high schools and gives children the opportunity to take part in a range of sporting activities - including basketball, bocce, break dancing, soccer, softball and circus skills.

The school holiday sports program is funded by Community Renewal, Logan City Council and McDonald's®.

Civil Contractors Federation Earth Awards 2008

Leading the way in innovative construction and environmental design, Logan City Council's SouthWest 1 development has been awarded the Earth Award by the Civil Contractors Federation (Queensland).

Council won the award, in conjunction with site contractors Neumans and GHD.

SouthWest 1 is a master-planned 40ha mixed industry and business precinct, which has attracted high quality green commercial tenants. Once fully tenanted, it is expected to create up to 2,000 new jobs in the city.

Beside it is the 80ha Berrinba Wetlands Park, a combination of natural beauty, environmental features and recreational facilities.

The Civil Contractors Federation Earth Awards are designed to highlight distinction in construction technique, as well as environmental and project management.

Logan City Council will now be eligible for a national award, to be announced later this year.

2008 Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns Competition

Logan City Council took out all three awards we nominated for in the Ergon Energy Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards for the inland South-East Queensland region.

  1. Sustainable Cities Award
    This award was won for the following initiatives:

    Conservation Action Priority Map, Re-vegetation Tool, Fossil Fuel Energy Reduction Projects, and the Logan Waterwise Education Program.

  2. Water Conservation Award
    This award was won for our Waterwise Education Program.

  3. Environmental Protection Award
    This award was won for the initiatives put in place at Brookvale Park and Riverdale Park.

2007 Ergon Energy Australian Tidy Towns Competition

Logan City Council's Bushcare program was awarded the Environmental Protection Award as part of the 2007 Ergon Energy Australian Tidy Towns Competition.

The award was won by Council and Loganholme Bushcare Group, a group of volunteers who carry out weed removal and tree planting in Alexander Clark Park.
