Broadband Internet Services

Benefits of Broadband logoLogan City Council has taken some bold steps in the expanding use of broadband internet in the City since 2003.

Council set up a Broadband Taskforce under the overall vision and guidance of the Mayor and our Economic Development Steering Committee, with the objective - For Logan to be a 100% connected city for all businesses and residents with competitive metro quality Broadband.

All Logan residents and businesses should now be able to enjoy broadband access. Please note that services, products and prices available in your area will vary from service provider to service provider. View a list of service providers in your area.

"It's never been easier for Logan residents and businesses to have access to the world and for the world to have access to Logan."

Logan businesses and residents are encouraged to consider the use of broadband services available in the city and make the change to get connected with broadband.  With greater connectivity comes greater information sharing and awareness of community activities and services helping to promote a more knowledgeable and active community in Logan City.

What is Broadband, you ask?

Broadband is a collective term used to describe digital high-speed internet connections. Broadband has a higher bandwidth than a dial up connection, allowing more information to be transmitted quicker and easier.

Simply put, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) sells you access to the internet. Though services will vary from provider to provider, most ISPs will provide you with equipment you need and will ensure your connection remains active and trouble free.

The most popular types of broadband services are:

  • ADSL – always on access over your phone line
  • cable - uses a cable TV connection
  • satellite – via a satellite to a dish installed at your premises
  • wireless - connection via airwave using land-based transmitters

What would you use broadband for?

A simple answer to this would be: Anything you can do with a dial-up internet connection, only much faster.

However, you can also do things that simply aren't feasible with a standard dialup connection. For example, you could download a file, browse the web, and check email at the same time - all much quicker than using a dial up connection.

Game players can enjoy dramatically faster and more enjoyable online gaming.

Users can benefit from Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP), instant messaging with video and audio to anywhere in the world.

Advantages of Broadband

Broadband has enormous benefits for business, home users and students, giving fast connections to the Internet.

Broadband can be connected 24 hours a day so there is no delay while you wait for a dial up connection.

Broadband does not tie up your phone line, so you can make and receive calls while using the Internet.

The cost of your broadband connection will be determined by the speed of service that you require, and your estimate of the amount of material you send and receive. You decide how much you spend. Your internet service provider (ISP) can help you select the package that best suits your needs.

Broadband is a constant connection to the internet. There's no need to dial-up and no engaged signals or dropouts.

Because cable, satellite, wireless and ADSL internet don't tie up your phone line, it means you don't have to pay for a second phone line.

The speed of broadband greatly improves productivity for business, home users and students.
