Logan City Cultural Plan

Logan City Council has used a cultural mapping process to provide a snapshot of Logan's cultural resources and to inform the development of the Logan City Cultural Plan.

The objective is that through its incorporation into town, strategic and corporate planning, a flow-on effect in terms of enhancing community pride and sense of identity, will occur.

Cultural development initiatives currently supported by Council

Logan City Council currently supports a range of cultural development initiatives through existing programs. Examples include but are not limited to:

Development of:

  • community facilities
  • environmental management and education
  • Logan Entertainment Centre
  • Mayes Cottage
  • multicultural partnerships
  • parks and recreational facilities
  • social strategy.

Ongoing support for:

  • events and festivals
  • Kingston Butter Factory
  • Libraries, including local history
  • Logan Art Gallery
  • Mayes Cottage.

Grant programs such as:

  • Community Assistance Scheme
  • festivals and events
  • EnviroGrants
  • Regional Arts Development Fund
  • Sport Development Program

Assistance to associations and societies among others such as:

  • Logan Artists' Association
  • Logan City Historical Museum Society

In addition, projects such as the Cultural Heritage Strategy and Illuminating Logan add to the "culture" of the city as do public artworks and mural strategies.

The Community Renewal Program also has many flow on projects which enhance the cultural life of the city.

Cultural Plan

As part of the Cultural Plan, Logan City Council will:

  • explore sponsorship / partnership links with local businesses
  • further develop existing links with schools, TAFE, University in the sharing of ideas and resources
  • maintain links with local community groups and disseminate information on their functions
  • foster links with neighbouring shires/cities to maximise potential of resources linked geographically, for cultural tourism opportunities
  • explore the development of public art programs to enhance public places and parkland
  • encourage festivals, activities and events specifically focused on children and youth
  • develop links between Logan Art Gallery, Logan Gardens, Logan Central Library and Logan Entertainment Centre as a major hub of cultural activities
  • capitalise on Logan as a microcosm of every wave of immigration to Queensland since the 1860s
  • promote local artists particularly in respect of mural opportunities, and
  • offer assistance and encouragement to community groups to apply for Festivals and Events and Regional Arts Development Funding.

In addition, Council will pursue a co-ordinated approach through its various branches the following opportunities:

  • community 'placemaking' projects
  • the recognition of Logan cultural achievements through the development of a portraiture Wall of Acclaim
  • the instigation of a school music and drama forum/competition
  • the Logan River Tinnie Trail
  • a cemetery management system given the intense interest in genealogy, and
  • life-long learning, particularly computer awareness and Internet access.

Cultural map

Cultural mapping identifies and records a community's cultural assets and begins a cultural assessment to assist with resources and funding priorities. It is the start of a permanent record, which can be expanded and maintained
