Biodiversity is the variety of all living things on Earth and is all around us. It refers to all the components of biological life, its diversity and interactions. It includes humans, animals, plants, fungi and microbes as well as the ecosystems and processes of which they are a part.
You can see examples of biodiversity all around you just look at the way:
- Frogs and birds eat the insects keeping their numbers down
- The native birds, bats and insects pollinate our gardens
- The way tiny bugs break down rocks and leaves to form fertile soils
- Our trees take up Carbon Dioxide and produce Oxygen
- The way marine organisms clean up the sewage we put into the oceans
- All the different types of foods and medicines from the environment
Logan City Council through its corporate plan and regional plans seeks to protect, manage and enhance the biodiversity in areas of natural value in the region. To achieve these goals Council has a variety of programs to protect our natural environment, including pest management, bushfire management, vegetation management and biodiversity protection.
