Biodiversity is the variety of all living things on Earth and is all around us. It refers to all the components of biological life, its diversity and interactions. It includes humans, animals, plants, fungi and microbes as well as the ecosystems and processes of which they are a part.
You can see examples of biodiversity all around you just look at the way:
- Frogs and birds eat the insects keeping their numbers down
- The native birds, bats and insects pollinate our gardens
- The way tiny bugs break down rocks and leaves to form fertile soils
- Our trees take up Carbon Dioxide and produce Oxygen
- The way marine organisms clean up the sewage we put into the oceans
- All the different types of foods and medicines from the environment
Logan City Council through its corporate plan and regional plans seeks to protect, manage and enhance the biodiveristy in areas of natural value in the region. To achieve these goals Council has a variety of programs to protect our natural environment, including pest management, bushfire management, vegetation management and biodiversity protection.

Listed below are links to more information on Council's management actions:
Vegetation Management Since the adoption of the Logan Planning Scheme 2006, the clearing of vegetation is regulated under the Vegetation Management Area in the planning scheme and no longer under Local Law 8.
Vegetation Laws Council controls a wide range of potential nuisances and health hazards relating to vegetation and unsightly conditions on private property.
Native Plants You can help Logan's environment by planting native trees on your own land. Council offers advice and guidance on suitable plants for your area.
Native Animals Council has produced a number of facts sheets so that you can become more aware of your natural environment and the things you can do to help protect the environment for the future. One way you can help is by reporting sightings of the Glossy Black-Cockatoo.
Fire and Biodiversity Council is a member of the Fire and Biodiversity Consortium and, in doing so, aims to provide a balance to biodiversity conservation and fire safety.
Weeds and Pests An important role for Council in both public and environmental health involves controlling pests and weeds that impact on both residents and the native environment.
Regional Initiatives To increase the effectiveness of Council's work towards a sustainable environment, it is involved with partnerships with other South East Queensland Councils and community groups.
