Council takes action on hooning issues

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Logan City Council has today taken steps toward establishing a 'Hoon Hotline' to combat hooning issues across the city.

Council will also investigate issues associated with the illegal use of trail bikes in Logan.

Safe City Advisory Committee Chairperson, Councillor Sean Black, said hooning was a state-wide issue, not just in Logan.

"In meeting with the Queensland Police, we know that other communities experience the same problems with hooning and trail bikes as Logan," he said.

A series of anti-hooning workshops will be held with stakeholders from Queensland Police, Council, local Councillors and the community to address all hooning issues, including the possibility of establishing a 'Logan Hoon Hotline'.

Meanwhile, Council will make a formal submission to the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) regarding off-road motorbike noise laws.

The CMC are currently conducting a review of Queensland's off-road motorbike noise laws and invited all Councils to comment.

Community, Sport and Customer Services Committee Chairperson, Councillor Hajnal Ban, said noise from trail bikes and other off-road bikes, continued to be an issue.

"The sound of off-road bikes tearing through bushland can really disturb a quiet Sunday afternoon in any neighbourhood," she said.

"It's a problem across Logan, particularly in the rural areas."

The current Queensland law enforcing motorbike noise under the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000, has been in force since July 2006.

"The CMC wants to look at the changes that were made to the law in 2006 and see if the law is still effective in controlling motorbike noise in our neighbourhoods," Cr Ban said.

"To do that, they need to hear from Councils who ultimately take the noise complaints from residents."

Council will make a formal submission to the CMC prior to the August 15 deadline.
