Council receives results of Windaroo Creek study

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

An environmental study into the conditions of Windaroo Creek will better help Logan City Council in planning nearby land use in the future.

The "Windaroo Creek Sustainable Loads Study" was finalised in June 2008, providing an assessment of the sustainable loads which can be absorbed without degrading the water system, while also achieving its water quality objectives.

Logan City Council Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson, Councillor Aidan McLindon, said Windaroo Creek formed part of the upper Albert River catchment and flowed through Buccan, Bahrs Scrub and Mt Warren Park.

"In 2006, Gold Coast City Council, where the creek was then located, developed a Catchment Management Plan which recommended a sustainable loads assessment be prepared to support stormwater management planning in the area," Cr McLindon said.

"We have now received that assessment and the results are quite good. Windaroo Creek has a relatively good water quality and generally complies with the water quality objectives set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

"However, increasing development pressure both now and in the future may impact on that, so it's important we keep an eye on what happens in the surrounding areas.

"In addition, we can adapt the study methodology to other catchments in Logan when necessary, which will be most helpful."
