Community invited to see Berrinba Wetlands

Friday, July 18, 2008

A free family fun day is being held next week as Logan City Council celebrates the opening of the rehabilitated Berrinba Wetlands Park.

The 80ha Wetlands are part of the SouthWest 1 master-planned mixed business precinct, one of the most significant projects in Logan City's 30-year history.

Mayor Pam Parker and Division 5 Councillor, Graham Able, have invited everyone to join the fun on Saturday, July 26, when the Berrinba Wetlands Park opens to the community for the first time.

"The Wetlands are a gorgeous part of our great City," Cr Parker said.

"I know it will be enjoyed by many people in the community, whether you're a fitness fanatic looking for a new place to walk, jog or ride your bike, a family looking for a fun but safe venue for your next picnic, or a nature lover wanting to know more about the local environment."

Cr Able said Logan City Council was proud of what had been created at the Berrinba site and wanted the whole community to know about it.

"That's why we're having this open day - everyone will be able to see for themselves how great this place is," Cr Able said.

"The Berrinba Wetlands Park features seven kilometres of walking tracks, five bridges for walkers and cyclists, remnant bushland, a series of sheltered picnic areas, playgrounds and an interpretive centre and meeting facilities overlooking the wetlands.

"And as part of the rehabilitation, 430,000 new native plants have been planted, including 20,000 shrubs and trees, and an area has been set aside in which to protect the endangered wallum tree frog."

The festivities will be held from 10am to 2pm and will include a free sausage sizzle, jumping castles, face painting and other entertainment.

The Berrinba Wetlands Park can be accessed from Bayliss Road or Magnesium Drive (off Browns Plains Road), Berrinba.

The South West 1 development will be officially opened by Premier, Anna Bligh, and Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker, in August.
