SouthWest 1 wins Earth Award

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Leading the way in innovate construction and environmental design, Logan City Council's SouthWest 1 development has been awarded the Earth Award by the Civil Contractors Federation (Queensland).

Council won the award, in conjunction with site contractors Neumans and GHD.

Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker, said she was proud to see SouthWest 1 winning such an award even before its official opening.

"SouthWest 1 is one of the biggest developments in Logan's history incorporating a mix of business and light industrial as well as the facilities for the community," she said.

"Council has put a lot of time and effort into consulting with local business, community groups and aboriginal elders to create an area that is multi-functional and unique.

"It hasn't even officially opened yet and it's already winning awards."

SouthWest 1 is a master-planned 40ha mixed industry and business precinct, which has attracted high quality green commercial tenants. Once fully tenanted, it is expected to create up to 2,000 new jobs in the city.

Beside it is the 80ha Berrinba Wetlands Park, a combination of natural beauty, environmental features and recreational facilities.

Division Five Councillor, Graham Able, said the SouthWest 1 development was one of the most exciting things to happen in Logan for many years.

"With this innovative $30m project, we have blended the natural environment with mixed industry in a way that creates economic growth and jobs, while also protecting our bushland and making it more accessible to the community," he said.

"I'd encourage everyone to take a look at South West 1 and see what it has to offer."

The Civil Contractors Federation Earth Awards are designed to highlight distinction in construction technique, as well as environmental and project management.

Logan City Council will now be eligible for a national award, to be announced later this year.

SouthWest 1 will be officially opened by Premier, Anna Bligh later this month.
