$1.25 million project underway at Crestmead

Tuesday, August 05, 2008

The first sod has today been turned for a Youth Hub at Crestmead Park.

The Youth Hub, located adjacent the Crestmead Community Centre, will provide a safe place for young people to be involved in activities, which they design, develop and in many cases deliver.

In addition, the existing Crestmead Community Centre is currently undergoing extension works.

Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker said Council was delighted to be involved in the $1.25 million project.

Council has provided $500,000 towards the project, while the remainder has come from the Queensland Government - Community Renewal ($500,000), and the Federal Government Regional Partnerships Program ($250,000).

"Projects such as this are very dear to me," Cr Parker said. "Logan has a fantastic community spirit and is a city where people matter. Volunteers have the heart to get things done and we are truly grateful for it," Cr Parker said.

Community, Sport and Customer Services Committee Chairperson, Councillor Hajnal Ban, said the Community Centre extension would provide enormous benefits to the Crestmead/Marsden community.

"The existing Community Centre Management Committee will be able to run additional programs from the Community Centre while the extensions to the hall will offer expanded opportunities for its users and hirers.

Cr Pidgeon said the designs for the Youth Hub had been finalised and construction would take approximately six months.

"A broad range of programs and activities will be delivered and I know that our local young people and the organisations that support them are happy to see the Crestmead Youth Hub finally taking shape," Cr Pidgeon said.

"One of the great things about this project will be having a regular police presence in Crestmead Park."

Council has already agreed to enter into a management arrangement with PCYC to oversee the use of this space.

"We are looking forward to working with PCYC to provide services to young people in this community," he said.
