Youth share their views for Logan's future direction

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Young people are having their say in the future of Logan at a series of youth engagement forums taking place in the next two years.

Community, Sport and Customer Services Committee Chairperson, Councillor Hajnal Ban, said the Logan City Youth Engagement Forums were an opportunity for Council to establish a strong relationship with Logan's young people.

"It is also a chance for young people to have their say in the planning and development of youth events, and provide input into issues that affect them," she said.

"In addition, participants are able to connect with other young people and develop skills and knowledge for leadership."

Cr Ban said the first forum, which was held in December, had been such a success that the number of schools taking part had doubled for the next forum on April 2.

"The feedback from the young people who took part showed that the majority had enjoyed having the opportunity to have their say, and had learnt about issues affecting them in the community and how they could deal with them," she said.

"Some of the topics discussed at the previous forum included leadership, youth activities, violence, healthy habits, community mapping and cultural awareness."

The forums are funded through the Queensland Government's Department of Communities' Youth Engagement Grants program.

Partners for the Youth Engagement Forums are the Department of Communities, ENABLE Schools Network, Queensland Police Service, Police Citizens Youth Club, Nutrition Australia and the Logan Healthy Schools Project.

The next Youth Engagement Forum will be held on April 2.
