Prime Minister Rudd to host Community Cabinet Meeting in Logan City

Tuesday, June 09, 2009

Residents will have the chance to air their concerns about the state of the nation when Prime Minister Kevin Rudd touches down in Logan City later this month.

In a first for Logan City, Mr Rudd will host a Community Cabinet Meeting at Beenleigh State High School on Tuesday 30 June.

With all 20 of his Cabinet Ministers in toe, Mr Rudd will host the public forum which is aimed at highlighting issues that are of concern to local residents, community members and civic leaders.

The forum is part of Mr Rudd's commitment to take his Cabinet to the community once a month.

Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker will attend the Forum with Council's Chief Executive Officer Chris Rose, and said she was delighted to host the Prime Minister's first visit to Logan City since he was elected in November 2007.

''This is a real coup for Logan City and a real opportunity for us to put on the table a number of issues which we in Logan City are experiencing at the moment as well as highlight our future plans and needs,'' she said.

''I wrote to Prime Minister Rudd late last November, thanking him for the establishment of COALG and his commitment and willingness to work with Local Government.

''I also took the opportunity  and boldly invited him to host a Community Cabinet meeting in Logan but was not overly confident he would grant us this honour - I guess you never know unless you try.

''This is an exciting opportunity for Logan City.''

''This is a very significant year for us - we are celebrating our 30th year as a city and our first anniversary as a new Logan City - so it seems fitting that we should mark the event with a visit from our Prime Minister where we will be given the opportunity to voice our plans for the city's future.''

Cr Parker applauded the efforts of Federal Member for Forde Brett Raguse for his role in attracting Mr Rudd to Logan City.

''Mr Raguse has worked extremely hard to make this Cabinet meeting happen and I thank him for his efforts and his commitment to his community and the wider Logan City,'' she said.

Cr Parker said members of the community would have the opportunity to have a brief ''one-on-one'' meeting with either Mr Rudd or one of his ministers at the invitation-only Forum. Mr Rudd will also address the forum and participate in a question and answer session.

''I encourage all residents who want to have a say in their future to register their interest in this historic event,'' she said.

The four-hour forum will start at 4.30pm.

Attendance at the forum is by invitation only. Residents can register their interest by filling in the online registration form at www.pmc.gov.au/community_cabinet, or by phoning 1800 088 323.

Registration will open at 9am on Tuesday 9 June and close at 5pm on Monday 15 June. Registration may close sooner if maximum capacity is reached.
