Open hearts support Victoria's bushfire-devastated communities

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Mayor presents Black Saturday relief fundsThe generosity of Logan City's community has helped provide more than $100,000 to Victorian communities devastated by the Black Saturday bushfires earlier this year.

Logan Mayor, Pam Parker and Logan Chamber of Commerce President, Bill Richards, today signed a cheque for $35,078.80, which was raised during the Logan Cares Bushfire Benefit event in February.

Cr Parker said the cheque would be forwarded to the Municipal Association of Victoria, which has been helping affected towns rebuild vital infrastructure and facilities through its Local Government Bushfire Recovery Fund.

"People across Australia were touched by the enormity of this tragedy and understandably wanted to help," Cr Parker said.

"The Logan Cares Bushfire Benefit was a chance for us in Logan to come together and show our support for everyone affected, and it was truly humbling to see such a wonderful result.

"Nothing can ever undo the horrors of the past few months for the bushfire survivors, but this money will help the Victorian communities rebuild their lives.

"While it has been four months since the bushfires happened and it hasn't been in the news lately, what our neighbours went through should never be far from our minds because their journey to recovery will take time."

In addition to the community donation, Logan City Council donated $70,000 in February to the bushfire appeal, and $30,000 to North Queensland residents affected by severe floods. Logan City Council staff also raised more than $5,000 for the bushfire relief.

"It is through the rebuilding of infrastructure and facilities - bricks and mortar - that communities will be restored," Cr Parker said.

"Our thoughts, and prayers continue for those who were affected by these disasters through the loss of loved ones or property, and as fellow Australians we encourage you all to rebuild your lives  May you all grow from strength to strength and your community spirit forever flourish. Tragedies of this magnitude always highlight the great Aussie spirit, and as they say, when the going gets tough, Australians know how to rally to the cause."
