New Logan Central Library looks a treat

Construction will soon start on Logan City Council's landmark Central Library.

The multi-million dollar facility is set to be built at 22 Wilbur St, the former site of Bi-Lo, and will be within close proximity of shopping centres and schools.

Health, Sport and Community Services Committee Chairman, Councillor Phil Pidgeon, said securing the central  location was a vital step in the planning of the Logan Central Library.

"Libraries that are located next to shopping complexes tend to be extremely popular within the community and that's exactly what we'll be able to deliver our residents with the new Logan Central Library," he said.

Council has committed a further $2.75 million in the 2009/10 Budget for the fit out / refurbishment of the building, that is due for completion early next year.

The federal government will contribute $1.25 million towards the project through its Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

Cr Phil Pidgeon said the revamped and relocated Library would be a vibrant community hub and a welcoming place for the community to visit.

"The existing Logan Central Library has been an extremely useful facility, but it has outgrown its space," he said.

"Moving forward with a facility like the new Library is another tremendous coup for Logan. When completed, it will provide an invaluable service to all levels of the Logan community."

Wireless internet services, book sales, "chill out" areas for young people, after hours access to committee meeting rooms and an immunisation clinic will all be readily accessible at the new Logan Central Library.

Multicultural facilities will also be a feature, with resources detailing the history of Logan local studies and genealogy and the "Nyeumba Meta" collections which specialises in Indigenous resources.
