Beenleigh and Eagleby areas to Yatala shuttle service commuters will have transport for another three months thanks to intermediary funding allocated by Logan City Council.
Logan City Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker acknowledged public transport was a state government matter, however was concerned about increased unemployment rates if people were left without transport.
"For this reason, we have decided to step in and see if we could help find a solution," she said.
"While public transport is not normally a service of local government, in this instance we consider it appropriate to provide up to $10,000 from our funds for a short period whilst alternative funding sources are explored.
"The funding has been allocated to contribute towards the cost of the continued operation of the Yatala shuttle bus service for an additional three months. During this time Council will work with the state government to identify alternate funding to enable the service to operate on a permanent basis without further Council support.
"We will be working to include TransLink in these discussions."
Cr Parker said Council had been working with the federal government to create jobs for Logan residents through the Federal Government Jobs Fund Initiative grants.
"We are very conscious of the current status of the world economy and want to do everything we can to protect and create jobs for the people of Logan City," she said.
"It is with jobs in mind that we have carefully considered this situation and made funding available to this cause."
The Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation is currently responsible for the service's operations and has recently informed commuters the service will cease effective 28 August 2009.
City Roads and Infrastructure Committee Chairperson, Councillor Ray Hackwood (Division 12) said the Council initiative would fund the service for a further three months until 28 November 2009.
