Friday, August 28, 2009

Former Wallaby hops onto Wall of Acclaim He won a World Cup for his country, played more than 100 games for his state, and now former Wallaby Peter Slattery has scored pride of place in his home town of Logan.

The former rugby union star is the latest inductee to Logan City Council's Wall of Acclaim, becoming the 14th local to receive the honour.

Accompanied by family and friends at Thursday's induction ceremony, Slattery said his home town had played a major role in his rise to rugby stardom.

"Every time I ran onto the field to play for the Wallabies or the Queensland Reds, I always carried Logan with me," he said.

"I have such fond memories of growing up here and playing at Meakin Park with the Souths Woodridge Rugby League club and I owe so much to the people who helped me through my formative years both on the field and off."

Slattery's efforts on the field for Western Suburbs Bulldogs, a club he joined in 1985, saw him selected as the halfback for the Queensland.

Peter played 109 games for the Reds and captained the side from 1992 to 1995.

In 1989, Peter fulfilled his childhood rugby dream of representing Australian when he received the call-up for the Wallabies.

He played 17 tests, and was a member of the 1991 World Cup-winning side that defeated England 12-6 in the final.

Throughout his career, Peter has been a great ambassador for Logan City and is still joint owner of the family home in Kingston.

Logan City Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker, said Slattery was worth of a special place in Logan history.

"Peter is somebody we can all be very proud of due not only to his fantastic achievements on the rugby field, but also the way he conducted himself as an ambassador for his sport and for Logan," she said.

"During his career, Peter was always proud to say he was from Kingston, Queensland. To hear him acknowledge his upbringing in Logan and the significance that had in his success in rugby and in life, is an inspiration to us all."

The Wall of Acclaim acknowledges and celebrates the achievements of Logan residents who have made a significant contribution to the development of Logan, and highlights their efforts to the wider community.

It is the ultimate local accolade for Logan residents, recognising national and international achievement, as well as locals who have made a long-standing and significant contribution to the development of the Logan community.
