If you're wondering what that large green object is above Paradise Rd, it's a construction designed to keep kids safe on their travels to and from Mabel Park state and secondary schools.
The soon-to-be-finished pedestrian bridge is a $4 million project, funded by the state government's Main Roads department and Division 3 Councillor John Grant says it’s a huge relief to see the bridge nearing completion.
"For many years we've been pushing the department of main roads to take action on Paradise Road to prevent what we believed was a disaster waiting to happen," he said.
"We've pushed Department of Main Roads unsuccessfully to reduce the speed limit and we've even resorted to having weldmesh on either side of the road in front of the schools to deter students from crossing.
Having this bridge is going to provide a huge safety boost for students and a huge relief for their parents and I thank the state government wholeheartedly."
Two sets of traffic lights on Paradise Rd will be removed when the bridge is functional in late October. Cr Grant has been advised that this would have minimal impact on traffic entering Paradise Rd from side streets.
"The Department of Main Roads has done traffic modelling and the research has shown that removing the traffic lights will not make it harder for cars entering Paradise Rd from adjoining streets," he said.
The pedestrian bridge is expected to be functional by late October.
