Council kicks in for 'Caddies'

Wednesday, September 09, 2009

Jimboomba Community Care Centre recieves its Class 9B certificate One of Jimboomba's most crucial community centres has received a huge boost thanks to the generosity of Logan City Council.

Jimboomba Community Care Association ('Caddies') has been granted approval from Logan City Council for a Class 9B certificate which means it can use its newly built $1 million function rooms, office space and kitchen facilities at Caddies in South Street for a variety of much-needed community services.

Logan City Council played a key role in the centre receiving the Queensland Fire Services green-light, after chipping in around $200,000 for fire safety equipment, drainage and car park facilities.

Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker recently inspected 'Caddies' and said its new certification status would enable it to be fully functional and deliver more vital services to Jimboomba residents.

"'Caddies' means so much to so many people in the Jimboomba area," she said.

"The Centre provides high quality and kind-hearted assistance to residents on everything from child health services to income tax to healthy lifestyles. It's a wonderful organisation with nearly 100 volunteers that deserves to be supported."

The new 'Caddies' extensions will be used to run youth training programs as well as cooking programs and catering for functions in the brand new kitchen facilities.

Jimboomba Community Care Association is a not-for-profit organisation and the building was named after Jimboomba teenager Caddie Bradley, who was lost at sea in 1997. The Centre boasts 90 volunteers and currently delivers six funded programs along with 10 volunteer programs.

Around 300 Jimboomba families rely heavily on the centre's Food Pantry and Bread Run programs that offer discounted groceries for sale as well as delivery services to residents.

A grand opening will be held for the Caddies extensions in February 2010. The extensions were jointly funded by local, state and federal governments, as well as community donations.
