Tender sought for twin bin system

Wednesday, September 09, 2009

Logan's new two-bin system has been put to tender.

Expressions of interest are being sought to deliver Logan City Council's two-bin system, that will take effect from July 1, 2011.

The decision to change from the current single-bin system was taken after three separate surveys all indicated that the majority of residents preferred separate wheelie bins for waste and recycling.

Environment, Parks and Waste Management Committee Chairperson, Councillor Lynne Clarke, said the tender process would determine any rate and service changes under the two-bin system.

"As we enter negotiations with potential contractors, we want them to consider a variety of services to cater for the different needs of residents," she said.

"We might be able to provide smaller or shared bins for less cost to residents living at unit complexes or retirement villages where disposal needs are not so great."

The new two-bin system will provide residents with two, 240 litre wheelie bins for general waste and recycling. Council is also set to consider whether smaller, 140 litre bins will also be made available.

The decision to change to a two-bin system means Logan City Council is no longer the only local government in south-east Queensland to operate under a single-bin system.
