As the power brokers behind Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre pressed the flesh and delivered congratulations at last week's official opening, two of Australian basketball's most powerful people were running an eager eye over the $17 million facility.
Basketball Australia CEO, Larry Sengstock, and his Queensland equivalent, Graham Burns joined government and community officials on an inspection of the new jewel in Logan's sporting crown, and were excited about what it will provide for their sport.
"This is a great initiative, a great facility; I was here with a hard hat on three months ago so I wanted to come back and see it finished," Mr Sengstock said.
"It's an outstanding venue that gives the basketball community an opportunity to develop different levels of competition."
Logan Metro has been confirmed as the host venue for next year's under-16 Australian basketball championships, and the under-18 state championship tournament. Basketball Queensland CEO Graham Burns said the facility already ranks among the premier venues in the nation for junior events.
"This is definitely one of the best, if not the best," he said.
"It has three courts, air conditioning and world class facilities off the court, so it's absolutely ideal for the running of tournament type events".
While the Chandler sporting complex has been earmarked as the likely home for Brisbane's return to the National Basketball League next year, Logan Metro will provide an exciting new base for local Womens Nation Basketball League side, the BDS Logan Thunder.
Mr Sengstock said the venue would rank among the best in the competition.
"When the grandstands are positioned around the centre court, this venue will have the look and feel of a true basketball stadium, with seating for around 2000 spectators, which is ideal," he said.
"It's a council owned facility, it’s a council run facility which makes it great because you're dealing with the people who want to make it happen. There isn't that middle man that has to make a living out of it because this is built for the community."
The Australian Diamonds Netball team road-tested Logan Metro last week in the lead-up to the third Trans-Tasman test against New Zealand. Diamonds' wing-attack, Lauren Nourse said the world champions were in awe of the new facility.
"It's amazing, it looks fantastic, everything is bright and fresh and new and the court looks great. We're really excited to be the first ones to use it," she said.
Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker, said the praise the new sporting hub received was the icing on the cake for Council.
"When we first planned for Logan Metro, we wanted a facility would provide something special for Logan residents," she said.
"To have the likes of Basketball Australia and our world champion netballers saying what a fantastic job we've done is a credit to everybody involved in this wonderful project."
