Logan bid for broadband boost

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Today councillors voted to support a regional approach to implementing broadband initiatives that will benefit and create opportunities for Logan City, its businesses and residents.

Logan Mayor Councillor Pam Parker, said Logan had been identified as a major growth area not only in Queensland, but Australia.

"Through improving Logan's access to broadband, the region's ability to be globally competitive and meet the needs of businesses and residents can be recognised," she said.

"Managing current and future growth must be achieved in a way that not only preserves and enhances the quality of life that South East Queensland residents and visitors currently enjoy, but also provide a sustainable map for shaping the continued growth and development of the region.

"The Council of Mayors has considered regional broadband issues through the Infrastructure Committee and resolved to seek Council views on National Broadband Network (NBN).  There is a proposal to engage the Federal Government, with a view of positioning South East Queensland at the forefront of the NBN reform agenda."

Logan City Council Economic Development Manager, David van den Brule, said as part of the NBN process, the government will implement a requirement from 1 July 2010, that all new estate developments install fibre optic networks to homes and workplaces.

"From the Australian Government's consultation paper on this issue, it appears local governments will be required to play an active role in facilitating this outcome through development approval processes," he said.

In April 2009, the Federal Government announced it would establish a company to invest up to $43 billion over eight years, to build and operate a NBN delivering super fast broadband throughout Australia.  The network will be fibre-to-the-premises, and will deliver speeds of 100Mbps.

Tasmania was selected as the first location for the network to be deployed with the Federal Government yet to announce which state or region will be next.
