Team Logan in top gear for bike challenge

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Sean DenchCouncillors Lisa Bradley and Russell Lutton, from Logan City Council, are taking the challenge, but they're not the only ones.

Entries for Team Logan have now closed with a total of 61 riders.

Team Logan riders include individuals, Council staff and Logan Women's Health group.

Sean Dench, Logan City Council Local Laws Officer, is competing in the ride, but this will be just like a training ride for him.  Sean normally rides between 60 and 75 km per day as part of his training schedule.

An avid cyclist, Sean competes in road racing events at an Elite B level as well as those crazy six, 12 and 24 hour endurance mountain bike events.

What makes Sean even more remarkable is the fact that he had his first open heart surgery at 18 months of age.

Sean had his second surgery at 11 years and final surgery at 19 years.

Sean, 32 years, now enjoys good health and the doctors attribute some of that to his fitness level.

Sean says he started competitive cycling at 17 years and finds it addictive.

"Cycling is my religion," he said

"I really enjoy participating in this event because most of my events are under race conditions whereas this is all about sharing the experience, getting active and enjoying some laughs along the way.

"As someone who was born with two holes in their heart, I am passionate about raising awareness and money for the heart foundation."

The annual event, organised by Bicycle Queensland, continues to gain in popularity and this year's event promises to be just as successful when the riders hit the road on Sunday 11 October.

Logan City Council is a proud major sponsor of the mass participation 100km ride.

The challenge aims to promote cycling, as well as raise funds for a number of charities including the Heart Foundation and Diabetes Australia (Qld).

Cr Bradley said she was very passionate about Logan, the city where she lives.

"There are so many reasons to be passionate about Logan.  The lifestyle it offers, its location and the facilities make it fantastic," she said.

Cr Bradley said she really wanted to see people along the route cheering Team Logan on.

"Logan has a strong community spirit," she said.

"I would encourage everyone to cheer us along as we will be riding together as a group.

Cr Bradley said the event was expected to see more than 10,000 people riding through Logan en-route to the Gold Coast.

This year's event will also be Cr Lutton's first involvement in the ride.

"I am really looking forward to the event," he said.

"I only started cycling about 12 months ago when Mark Tookey came to see me about organising a ride to Canberra to raise funds for cerebral palsy.  I was so excited by his proposal I decided to get on board and join the ride, and ever since then I have been enjoying cycling.

"It's a good way to exercise and clear the mind.  I really find it helps me to de-stress."

Let's go Team Logan!
