Thousands turn out for Logan's birthday bash

Monday, October 05, 2009

They turned out in their thousands to celebrate Logan's 30th birthday at Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre last Saturday.

The day doubled as the city's first anniversary celebrations following last March's Local Government Reform.

More than 4000 residents filed through the newly-opened Browns Plains Rd complex to celebrate the birthday milestone and enjoy a day of fun, fitness, cultural displays and entertainment.

Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker, said the event gave residents young and old the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Logan and enjoy a day out with loved ones.

''As a city, we have seen so many changes in our 30 years so it was only fitting that we held a special event to mark the significant milestone,'' she said.

''And we thought we could make the event even more enjoyable for our residents by hosting it at our new $17 million Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre so they could see first hand the exciting direction their city is heading towards.''

Entertainment on the day included performances from Indangakaranga - Burundian Drumming, Tepuaneinei - Cook Island group, Beenleigh Theatre Group, Karen Spencer School of Dance, the Heart Foundation's Jump Rope for Heart, and Spice Up Your Life Indian Dance Group.

Fitness fanatics were also put through their paces with the Les Mills Body Pump session and balance activities while children let loose on the tug-p-war, noodle tag, Swiss Ball Dodge Ball, and Red Rover.

Young children also enjoyed themselves in the jumping castle, and story telling areas, while others made the most of the free face painting.

Cr Parker said she was pleased to see residents brave the heat on Saturday to join in the festivities and was pleased all embraced the free shuttle service from SouthWest1 to the venue.

''We have so much to be proud of here in Logan City,'' she said.
''When I stop and think of just how much we have achieved in our first 30 years I am amazed.
''Logan City has transformed from a good shire to a great city within 30 years - just imagine what we will achieve in the next 30 years.
''Saturday was about acknowledging all of that and thanking our wonderful residents for the role they have played in building our city.''
Visitors to the birthday celebrations also enjoyed a slice of commemorative birthday cake which was cut by Cr Parker, Deputy Mayor Russell Lutton and Cr Cherie Dalley (Division 8).

The winners of the Come Alive in Logan Creative Performance Competition were also announced at the celebrations.
Category winners were:
• Primary School - Windaroo State Primary School;
• High School - Canterbury College;
• Dance School - Intrinsic; and
• Community Group - Beenleigh Brass Band.

Each category winner received a plaque, certificate and $1000.
