Community requests sees mural completed

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

Youth groupLogan's elderly have a new view thanks to the efforts of community-spirited youth.

Lorna Ludwig from Yurana Respite Centre’s independent living section visited Councillor Lisa Bradley (Division 1) at a community chat to ask if anything could be done to prevent the glare from the colourbond fence out the front of her unit.

A couple of weeks later, Shirley Hardman from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ contacted Cr Bradley asking if she knew of any service projects they could do in the community.

Cr Bradley put one and one together and got a great result for the residents of Yurana.

Ms Ludwig said she went to Cr Bradley looking for help from Council to see if anyone could finish the mural which was started by a local school several years ago.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Rochedale Ward Bishop, Daniel Phillips felt it would be a good project for the youth to get involved in.

"Giving service to others is necessary in order to look beyond oneself, and it sounded like a fun project to be involved in," he said.

Cr Bradley said she was pleased to be able to help facilitate a win-win solution for everyone.

"This is a really great outcome for the residents of Yurana and the fence really does look like a piece of art," she said.

Mrs Ludwig said one of her neighbours was having trouble with the glare from the fence at certain times of the day and was unable to look outside because of it.

"I thought about it for a bit and then came up with the idea to paint the fence," she said.

"We have all (the residents facing the fence) been so thrilled to have the youth group continue the mural along an additional 10 panels of the fence.

Ms Ludwig said it was fantastic for the people who look out to the fence all day long.

"They are loving it because there is no more glare and the bush mural design has created so much interest," she said.

"I am extremely grateful, it is just so wonderful.  It actually makes me quiet emotional."

Three church leaders, 20 youth aged between 12 and 18 and a few parents were involved in the project that took four sessions, over two months, to complete.
On Saturday September 26, the project was completed.

Artist and director for the project John Friswell said it had been al long time since he had done anything like this, but had been a very rewarding experience.

Youth leader Jade Hillier said it was rewarding to hear the residents call it their ‘art gallery’.

Parent Rachel Garcia said it had been a great experience to have had the opportunity to brighten the environment for our wonderful senior citizens who have done so much.

Youth, Bethany Gordon said they were giving back to the community that built Logan.

Cr Bradley donated $800 from her Community Benefit Fund to pay for materials needed to complete a mural painting along the fence.
