Logan Water - Best Practice finalist

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

Logan Water has been selected as a finalist at this year's IPAA Public Sector Excellence Awards to be held on Friday 9 October at Old Government House.

City Governance, Finance and Water Committee Chairperson, Councillor Luke Smith (Division 6) said Logan Water was nominated for Starting-on-the-job in the Best Practice for Local Government category.

"Logan Water was selected because of their start and finish workplace trial," he said.

"In June 2008, Logan Water decided to trial a new work practice whereby employees could start and finish at the location of the job rather than starting and finishing their days at the Council depot.

"At the end of the 12 month trial a cost/benefit analysis was undertaken where is showed direct improvements to productivity."

During the trial an extra 7,488 hours were achieved saving Council $403,000 in employee costs, customer service was improved by over 20 per cent and the non-financial benefits showed increased self-esteem, greater self management with more job ownership by employees.

Cr Smith said the outcomes of this trail were so significant that in January 2009, only half way into the trial, a recommendation was made to adopt the trial arrangements as permanent work practice.

The recommendation was adopted and the implementation team then worked to develop a permanent work plan on this basis.
