Fundraiser shows a caring Logan has talent

Monday, October 19, 2009

Concert-goers were left in awe as local performers stole the show at Sunday's Logan Cares Appeal Concert at Logan Entertainment Centre.

The four-hour concert raised much-needed funds for the families affected by the recent tsunami in Samoa and earthquake in Indonesia. The event also showcased the impressive array of international-standard performers Logan City boasts.

Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker, commended all concert-goers for their attendance and support for the devastated communities.

''We all lead such busy lives these days and I am well aware there were three other major events in Brisbane at the same time as our concert - including a Samoan community event at Ballymore - so I applaud each and every person who turned up for the Logan Cares Appeal,'' she said.

''By joining in the fun they saw some of the most magnificent talent the Logan Entertainment Centre has had the opportunity to showcase - and it was all local.''

Cr Parker said the 18 performers were all well-received by the audience. Performers included: Logan beat boxer, Kitch; Indonesian flute player, Efiq; Heilani Polynesian School of Arts, Indonesian jazz fusion group, Ethnotic, Angels of Fire; World Talent Quest winner, Ebony Rose; Samoan reggae band, Paua; and two-piece African group, Jahbutu.

''But it was the performance by Spacifix that really stole the show,'' she said.

''They just came out and ignited the crowd - everyone was just in awe of them, they were brilliant.

''When their set finished they jumped into the audience and formed basically a conga line and everyone joined in, from staff, members of the audience and police - I haven't seen anything like it before.''

Cr Parker said the concert also gave Council the opportunity to take Logan City and the event to the world through the use of web casting.

''I have been told there were a significant number of people who viewed the concert via these means so that is a great effort and something we have not been able to do before,'' she said.

''For us to be able organise a world-class event like this within two weeks was an amazing effort by all involved and I commend them for their dedication and commitment to help the people of these affected communities.

''I am sure any money we raised through the appeal and our various donations will be gratefully received by the people of Samoa and Indonesia who are really experiencing a difficult time.''

Cr Parker said a final figure on the amount raised at Sunday's concert and at Council's various collections would not be known until the end of the week.

''We will then pass this money on to the Red Cross to distribute,'' she said.
