Council diesel truck goes green

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Wombat the green Council truckUsing world-first smart technology, Logan City Council is participating in a diesel emission reduction trial.

Council is working with clean technology company Peak 3 to measure and reduce its diesel emissions.

City Roads and Infrastructure Committee Chairperson, Councillor Ray Hackwood (Division 12), said Council was impressed by the research and development work being done by Peak 3 and wanted to get involved.

"When we heard about the technology Peak 3 were developing, we decided this was something we wanted to be part of," he said.

"Two months ago we had the emission measure and reduction technology fitted to one of our tip trucks, and anecdotal evidence from our Plant Fleet Services Manager tells us the vehicle has been running smoother, using less fuel, demonstrating greater power when most needed, and showing less evidence of emissions in our exhaust.

"The results from the trial will be collected at the end of the third month, when the vehicle travels to Brisbane City Council's emissions testing centre."

Logan Deputy Mayor, Councillor Russell Lutton (Division 2), said Council was using the trial to collect evidence of emission reductions and cost savings with the view to install the clean technology in several of its diesel plant.

"We see this as a really positive step for Council.  We want to lead the way for other councils and organisations to follow," he said.

Peak 3 Chief Executive Officer Col Chandler said the clean technology worked in two parts, firstly they have a computer program which monitors all engine components and secondly they used secondary sacrificial fuel.

"By monitoring the engine, the computer can tell where the secondary fuel is needed and inject just the right amount.  This helps the diesel to burn cleaner and produce fewer emissions," he said.

Peak 3 will be showcasing its technology and be available to answer questions at the Water and Energy Expo on Sunday 25 October from 10am to 2pm at the Logan Entertainment Centre.
