Developer to consider relocating

Friday, October 23, 2009

Logan City Council will work with the developers of a proposed emergency accommodation centre to find a suitable site to relocate.

Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker, invited representatives from Out of the Box Developments to a meeting today to discuss the community concern surrounding the developer's plans to build a community care centre at Lot 2, Old Logan Village Rd, Waterford.

Cr Parker said she felt the site was inappropriate and was pleased the applicants had agreed to Council's suggestion to explore all options for an alternative site.

"The school, parents and residents have raised serious questions about building a homeless centre across the road from a school - and as a parent I can understand why,'' she said.

''I am pleased with how discussions went today and I am confident that with goodwill demonstrated from all parties, we will see a favourable outcome for all involved.

''There is certainly a need for facilities like this in our community - but they should never be placed next to a school.''

Cr Parker said she was a strong advocate for improved facilities for Logan's most disadvantaged and would continue to encourage them to be established in suitable locations.

"I must emphasise the company has followed all the proper procedures - unfortunately this flawed process is an unwanted legacy left by the Gold Coast Council and Logan Council is bound by these laws,'' she said.

"It also must be pointed out that at no stage has Council pushed for this centre to be built across from a school.''

Cr Sean Black (Division 4) supported Cr Parker and said an alternative site was the best outcome for all involved.

A decision has not been made on the existing application for Lot 2 Old Logan Village Rd, Waterford.

The site was zoned "Special Purpose Community" as part of the Gold Coast City Council's Gold Coast Planning Scheme 2003. Its use is defined as a Community Care Centre and it is a Code Assessable development - meaning the application does not require public consultation.

Logan City Council Officers have reviewed the information provided by Out of the Box Developments and will be seeking further clarification on the information provided, as it is unsatisfactory at this stage.
