Logan businesses destined for success

Monday, October 26, 2009

Logan businesses and employment service providers welcomed the chance to take part in the second Logan Workforce Skills Forum on Tuesday, 6 October.

The second forum gave industry representatives and local employers a stage to detail their current workforce requirements and convey specific skill needs for training.

Workforce Development Officer, Marita Tomlinson, said the forum was aimed at facilitating links between Logan businesses and local employment, education and training organisations.

"These forums provide a way for us to deliver our Workforce Development Program," she said.

"We provide assistance to local businesses on their workforce and staff training needs.

"We provide information and contact details to Logan employment, education and training sectors, State and Federal Government programs and business groups."

Ms Tomlinson said professional development for staff and strategies for recruitment, retention and skilling were also a program focus.

The forum included guest speaker Veronica Lloyd, Australia Post Recruitment and Diversity Manger.

Ms Lloyd spoke about her role at Australia Post, how to deal with workforce challenges and building partnerships. She also provided suggestions on how to deal with staff vacancies and some of her own recruitment tactics.

Kenny Vico, Training Coordinator for ACCES Service Inc also spoke at the forum.

Ms Vico discussed ACCES Service's pre-employment programs which assist job seeker clients by providing an outline of employer expectations, employability skills and training.

The second forum was touted as a huge success with participants saying it was very beneficial.

Some of the comments from feedback forms included:

"Australia Post presented informative information providing positive and realistic opportunities."

"It is great to hear directly from an employer. The presentation was honest and frank which helps in presenting an honest picture of recruitment and employment."

"Veronica from Australia Post provided relevant and honest information to assist my company and our jobseekers"

"Terrific opportunity for people from business to get together and share experiences and strategies."

"The range of information and ability to network is fantastic."

A third forum will be held 1 December at Springwood Tower Hotel between 10am and noon.
