The keenly-anticipated Logan Metro Indoor Sport and Recreation Centre is on target and on budget.
Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker, Chief Executive Officer Chris Rose, and Councillor Cherie Dalley inspected the Browns Plains Rd, Heritage Park development on Tuesday 23 December and were delighted with the progress of the $20 million project.
Councillor Parker said the facility would set new standards for indoor sports centres in Logan City and would be a major asset to wide sections of the community.
Scheduled for completion in early July 2009, the two-storey Logan Metro Indoor Sport and Recreation Centre will boast: three international-standard courts; seating for 1500; a gymnasium; sports hall; team change rooms; child minding facilities; four meeting rooms; aerobics rooms; cardio room; catering facilities; reception area; first aid rooms; referee rooms and parking for about 150 cars.
''The project is going particularly well despite the recent bad weather we have experienced,'' Cr Parker said.
''We are only a maximum of four or five days behind our plans which is excellent going considering the magnitude of the project and the weather.
''Just as importantly, cost wise the development is running extremely well and I am very confident that this facility will be open for all of Logan City to enjoy next July.
''The Logan Metro Indoor Sport and Recreation Centre is a real showcase for Council. We are extremely proud of this project and know it will make a real difference to so many in our community.''
Cr Dalley attributed the efficient construction to the extensive planning process by Council.
''When you are talking about constructions of this size, you do expect the odd obstacle but we have been extremely fortunate in this instance and that is largely due to the extensive planning Council has put in - it has certainly paid off,'' she said.
''This centre will allow Logan City to offer something we have never been able to do in the past and that is the ability to open our doors to international-standard competition.
''While the whole facility is designed to international standards, the three courts allow us the opportunity to host all international-level court sports with the exception of volleyball.
''Netball and basketball organisers have already expressed interest in hosting major events here so that is going to be a real coup for Logan City.''
Cr Dalley said the Logan Metro Indoor Sport and Recreation Centre would be the home of the city's first team in the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) - Logan Thunder.
Logan Thunder is currently playing out of Cornubia Park Sports Centre - Insports.
Sommer and Staff Constructions Pty Ltd are the contractors for the project and Cr Parker praised their efforts in bringing Council's development plans to fruition.
