Cats are not currently required to be registered with Council, however we do encourage residents to voluntarily have their cats desexed, and to identify them by a collar and tag, or a micro-chip. It is necessary to ensure your cat is controlled, to prevent nuisance wandering and to protect wildlife in our city.
One cat is permitted to be kept on a property that is less than 300 square metres in area. If your property exceeds 300 square metres you may keep up to two cats.
Council accepts stray cats at its Animal Management Centre when the cats are privately impounded. The Animal Management Centre has a Cat Sale Program, and unclaimed cats with friendly personalities and good health are given a second chance to find a good home.
