Challenging Australia's Young People for Fresh Ideas

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Minister for Youth Kate Ellis launched a new national competition to stimulate fresh ideas about how young people can connect with their communities. The annual Prime Minister’s Australian Youth Forum Challenge will start next year. Young Australians will be asked to propose projects that get young people engaged in their community and actively addressing local needs.  The ideas will need to be sustainable and to link in with wider support, organisations and local businesses.

A panel of young people, youth workers and industry experts will shortlist the best ideas, with the Prime Minster and Minister Ellis choosing the ultimate winners.  Winners will be eligible for up to $15 000 to put their ideas into action. Entrants will be encouraged to put forward ideas that give young people the skills and experience they need to learn, work, engage in community life and be a part of decision-making that affects them.

The Office for Youth will call for proposals for the Prime Minister’s AYF Challenge in early 2010.

More information can be found on the Australian Youth Forum website.

Children and Young People's Participation Strategy 2008-2011

In October 2008, the Department of Child Safety launched the Children and Young People’s Participation Strategy 2008-2011.  The strategy aims to enhance opportunities for a child or young person to overcome barriers and have a voice. Involvement in decisions that affect their lives is a fundamental right for all children, and of particular importance for children who have been abused.

The strategy was developed with input from departmental staff and external stakeholders including young people selected by the CREATE Foundation and young people involved with the Out Loud group in Townsville. The strategy document was informed by the literature review Listening, Hearing and Acting. To support the strategy, children and young people faced with the prospect of living away from home due to abuse or neglect, also have access to an ‘Info Kit’, to help them participate in decisions affecting their futures.

The strategy are available for download from the Department of Child Safety website.
