The Logan City domestic waste collection system uses a single 240 litre wheelie bin. The bin is divided to accommodate both general waste and recycling in the single collection. The rear 30% of the bin is for recyclable items and the front 70% section of the bin is for general waste. This bin is collected weekly from all domestic properties throughout Logan City.
The trucks used to collect the total domestic waste stream (both domestic recycling and domestic general waste) are also split with two separate compartments. The horizontally divided truck maintains the waste separation by storing the recyclable materials in the top compartment of the truck and the general waste in the lower compartment.
After collection the materials are transported to the Browns Plains SmartTiP. Here the bottom or garbage section of the truck is deposited in the landfill. The recyclables in the top of the truck are taken to the Materials Recovery Facility at Crestmead.
Split bin system
The all-in-one wheelie bin was chosen by Council to ensure residents had the best possible recycling service at the lowest possible cost. The single bin encourages residents to investigate mechanisms to reduce waste such as composting food and garden waste.
The service is:
- environmentally responsible
- user friendly
- cost effective
- safe
One collection truck means:
- less fuel usage
- less noise in built up areas
- residents don't have to keep track of recycling days
- only one bin has to be wheeled out for collection
- fewer trucks and drivers, which means less financial outlay for ratepayers and a lower likelihood of accidents, and results in reduced road damage on suburban streets
Request an additional wheelie bin
For a small fee (charged annually as part of Council's Rates) residents can request additional wheelie bin services.
Before requesting an additional bin we suggest you read about minimising Waste, recycling and composting to see if you can reduce the amount of waste you create. Also look at the services available at the SmartTiP and the Logan Recycling Markets. This helps all of us in the community by reducing landfill space, reducing resource and energy use and saving money.
Note: Above costs for one additional bin only, additional charges apply for subsequent bins.
Landfill accounts and exemptions
Many organisations are eligible for either a landfill account or an exemption from landfill charges (e.g. charities). To find out more, refer to Smart Tip Exemption (pdf).
