2007 Health Promotion is one of the initiatives of the Logan Chronic Diseases Place Based Initiative (PBI). The Risk Factors being addressed are Smoking, Nutrition, Alcohol, Physical Activity, and Mental Health (SNAPM). The target groups are: 0-8 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and multicultural groups. Queensland Health funding has been allocated for various Health Promotion projects. One of these projects will be a Social Marketing program. It will be a local response of the statewide campaign 'Eat Well Be Active - Healthy Kids for Life'. The health promotion package 'Make The Most Of It - Your Life' is currently being distributed to Queensland households as an initiative of this campaign. Plans are underway to invite organisations to apply to deliver the social marketing project. Funding is planned for release by 30 June 2007. For more information refer to Action 3.3.0 Chronic Disease Place Based Inititive.
Date: 20/10/05 There are a large number of networks, interagency, and groups of concerned citizens making use of any available opportunities to communicate identified gaps on an on-going basis. Therefore a formal needs analysis would not be necessary. The increased processes of collaboration being developed through the SNGOs project will improve existing processes of needs analysis and gap identification. The service assessments and performance reports conducted by the Department of Communities, and similar reporting mechanisms of other funding bodies are also used to identify gaps and required needs which are then communicated upwards as appropriate. |

Logan City Council, in partnership with the Heart Foundation, coordinates the ‘Just Walk It’ program in Logan City. This provides a great opportunity to be regularly active, in a social, fun and supportive way. Joining a ‘Just Walk It’ group gives you the chance to get some healthy, regular physical activity, in a fun, social environment. It's a great way to get to know your neighbours and your neighbourhood.
‘Just Walk It’ groups are led by ‘walk organisers’, who set the route, days and times of the walks, and keep a record of who attends. The National Heart Foundation provides these walk organisers with free training and merchandise as a ‘thank-you’ for playing this role. Walkers and walk organisers receive information about physical activity, a regular newsletter, and incentives (certificates and merchandise) to encourage them to "stick with it".

2008
On 5 December 2007, the Queensland Premier and Health Minister announced that the Government would tackle the poor condition of Queensland's oral health by introducing fluoride into the State's water supplies.
"Together with oral hygiene and good nutrition, fluoridation has been proven to reduce tooth decay by up to 40 percent, and a Smart State cannot ignore the extensive scientific evidence that shows fluoridation is the missing link in Queensland's oral health system."
"Queenslanders have the worst teeth in the country - for example, our 5-12 year olds have twice the tooth decay compared to kids living in the ACT, which has had 100% fluoridation for more than 40 years."
"In a move that will bring Queensland into line with all other States and Territories, the Premier said 80 percent of Queenslanders would be drinking fluoridated water within two years, growing to more than 90 percent by 2012."
At the time of writing, it is estimated that Logan's water will be fluoridated by December 2008.
For more information, please refer to Queensland Health's water fluoridation website at: http://www.health.qld.gov.au/fluoride/default.asp
March 2007 The Logan Oral Health team continues to host community wide meeting to provide updates on evidence based water fluoridation information, including a brief summary of the level of tooth decay found in the Logan area from a recent study.
If you are interested in joining this group you can contact Kerri Dimou via email: kerri_dimou@health.qld.gov.au
