Residents receiving help from Logan West Meals on Wheels volunteers will have a little extra cheer in their annual Christmas hampers this week following a $1200 donation from the Division 7 Community Benefit Fund.

The donation funds the purchase of individually packed Lions Christmas cakes to accompany a hamper of Christmas goodies from Lions Logan West.

Councillor Laurie Smith (Division 7) said the donation would help make sure some of the community's most vulnerable felt connected and included during the festive season.

"Unfortunately, many of our elderly residents spend Christmas alone when extended families travel for holidays," he said.

"I knew the team at Logan West Meals on Wheels were putting together a care package to make sure their clients felt some of the magic of Christmas – I'm just glad I could help with something small.

"I'll continue to support this event next year by providing the same funding in 2015."

Logan West Meals on Wheels Secretary Karen Grasmeder said the donation would help spread the joy of the season throughout the community.

"We give out a hamper to every client, for about three to four years now," she said.

"They love it – for some people it's the only thing they get all year, they don't have much family around.

"You can see it on their faces, it's wonderful."

Volunteers are always welcome. Anyone wanting to volunteer can drop by the Logan West Meals on Wheels kitchen, at the Logan West Community Centre, Wineglass Drv, Hillcrest.
