Big numbers expected for annual desexing

There are plenty of good reasons to desex your pet and Logan City Council will give responsible owners a few more when De-Sexpo kicks off again in 2015.
Owners who book their dog or cat in for desexing with participating vets during the De-Sexpo promotion in July and August will receive a free microchip for their pet from Council.
Dogs will also receive a free nail trim, while owners will go into a draw to win prizes for themselves and their pet.
Animals and City Standards Committee Chairperson, Councillor Graham Able (Division 5), said bookings fill up fast each year and urged residents to contact their vet now.
"Each year there is a mad rush from owners wanting to desex their pet during this promotion," he said.
"Desexing not only saves the owner money on annual registration fees it can also save their beloved pet's life.
"Desexing female pets significantly reduces the risk of urine infections and mammary cancer while in males, it significantly reduces the risk of cancer of the prostate gland.
"It can also help significantly with behaviour issues as desexed cats and dogs are less likely to roam, fight or be a nuisance to neighbours."
Pets can be desexed from eight weeks of age or one kilogram in weight and owners wanting to claim a discount on their annual registration must provide a copy of their pet's desexing certificate.
Cr Able said pets that have been desexed usually become more affectionate which is great for family pets.
For bookings phone your local participating vet or 3209 3220 for the Combined Vets of Logan City Community Desexing and Microchip Clinic located at the Animal Management Centre.
