Mayor Pam Parker and Cr Lisa Bradley join in the fun with members of local community group, Vaka Takitumu Kuki Airani O Queensland Inc, at Mabel Park.

In less than two weeks, Logan residents have the opportunity to join a team that will certainly clean up!

A national event, Clean Up Australia Day is held on the first Sunday of every March and encourages the young and old to get involved in keeping their local environment free of litter.

Mayor Pam Parker said simple and easy actions were often the most effective and encouraged everyone to help make a difference to the health of Logan's environment.

"We are fortunate to have some beautiful parks and reserves in Logan, but unfortunately they sometimes can become spoilt by litter and rubbish," she said.

"Last year, an astounding 565,631 volunteers collected an estimated 16,449 tonnes of rubbish at 7,477 registered sites across Australia.

"Let's help top those numbers this year and keep our city sparkling by getting involved."

Environment and Sustainability Chairperson, Lisa Bradley (Division 1) said she had already registered her own Clean Up Australia Day site and encouraged residents to do the same.

"I've started my clean up along the Logan River and will continue for the next few weeks," she said.

"Volunteers can join an existing site or register their own via the Clean Up Australia website.

"Individual, community groups, businesses and schools can all volunteer and the free Clean Up Kit, which includes bags, gloves, information and promotional materials, will be sent to upon completing registration."

Cr Bradley said Council's Waste Services branch would assist in providing skip bins, free of charge, for registered sites across Logan.

"Once you've registered your site online, ensure to contact Logan Waste on 3412 5459 before Friday 24 February to arrange for a skip at the site location," she said.

"And don't forget to ensure your volunteers have sun protection and appropriate footwear."

Logan resident and Secretary of local community group Vaka Takitumu Kuki Airani O Queensland Inc, Lani Matapo, said she had been coordinating a Clean up Australia Day site in Mabel Park since 2009.

"It's our way of giving back our time and service to our Logan City Council and community," she said.

"The majority of our members and children live in Logan and attend the Mabel park schools however we also have members from the Brisbane city area.

"We all come together on Clean Up Australia Day as a way of encouraging our youth and children to maintain a clean and safe environment for the benefit of future generations."
