Citizenship ceremony

Logan City Council's Australia Day citizenship ceremony welcomed 180 new Australian citizens.

On Australia Day, Thursday 26 January, 180 people from 47 different countries became Australian citizens at Logan City Council's citizenship ceremony.

Logan Mayor, Councillor Pam Parker, said citizenship was an auspicious occasion that symbolised the decision for people, not born in Australia, to choose our great country as the place they called home.

"Citizenship is such a meaningful and welcoming occasion, celebrating the new citizens of our great nation," she said.

“January 26 is an especially important day for those choosing to become Australian citizens, as they take an exciting step towards showing their commitment and loyalty to this nation and the desire to share a common future.

"It is the final step in the journey to becoming an Australian citizen and a day when a person makes a formal commitment to their new home.

"It does not mean they are forsaking their past, but rather embracing their future."

Cr Parker said Logan had a vibrant multicultural community with people from 186 different ethnic backgrounds.

"It is wonderful that 180 people from diverse cultures have chosen to make Logan their home and a place to raise their families," she said.

"Logan has such a rich multicultural society and this only adds to our unique community spirit."

The ceremony was held at the Logan Entertainment Centre and started at 8am with entertainment from Steve Sparrow and the Nunukul Yuggera Aboriginal Dancers.

Official proceedings commenced at 9am and by 11am, another 180 residents were calling Australia home.

The Australia Day citizenship ceremony is one of many held by Logan City Council each year with the next to be held in February 2012 at the Kingston Butter Factory.
