Logan Urban Design Awards
The Logan Urban Design Awards (LUDA) is a biennial event promoting excellence in the design and creation of urban environments large and small within the City of Logan.
The 2016 Logan Urban Design Awards will be awarded from one of the four categories below:
- Master Planning Award - Awarded to master planned developments and communities
- Landscape Architecture and Urban Infrastructure Award - Awarded to exemplar public realm works
- Architecture Award - Awarded to exemplar built form projects (residential, commercial, industrial or institutional)
- Business, Programs and Events Award - Awarded to exemplar businesses, programs or events that contribute to a coherent and appealing urban environment
The awards are open to projects, businesses or events that reside within Logan City since 2000. Projects entered into the Awards must have reached completion at least to the point of enabling assessment by the judging panel. Projects may cover a range of scales and types as defined by the four awards categories and the selection criteria.
Logan Urban Design Award winners
The LUDA 2016 awards were announced on 12 October 2016 at an event in the Beenleigh Town Square.
Judges for the LUDA 2016 awards were selected from voluntarily participation and consist of three indeprendant experts of professional and peak body affiliations, the Mayor and Chairperson of the Planning and Development Committee. Reflecting on the collaborative nature of urban design, the juding panel will be a partnership between organisations active in urban design projects both locally and nationally. The three independant judges are:
Acting CEO - Invest Logan
Todd is facilitating the establishment of Invest Logan Pty Ltd (Invest Logan) as a ‘for profit’ entity. The purpose of which is to attract investment and other opportunities to Logan City which will significantly enhance the economic and social outcomes for our city and community. Todd joined Logan City Council in 2009. Previously he was Deputy CEO – Strategy and Sustainability and then Todd was overseeing development Approvals, town planning policy, planning for future growth, investment and attraction, property development, environment management and health and waste management, and works with residents and customers to protect the amenity of the city. He became Deputy CEO in December 2012 and has worked in the private sector and all three tiers of government: local, state and federal. Todd has been involved in planning for more than 20 years and held senior management positions for more than 15 years. He is also involved in planner education in his role as adjunct lecturer in planning practice at James Cook University and is the current President of the Planning Institute of Australia, Queensland Division.
Design Director - Jemmott Associates
Anthony is a principal and founder of Jemmott Associates. He is a Registered Architect, a Member of the Australian Institute of Architects and a Member of the Urban Development Institute of Australia. He has a particular commitment to delivering quality design and has specialist skills in working across disciplines to achieve integrated urban design outcomes. He has built a reputation for design quality and successful time and cost management of completed works. Driven by an interest in humanist and sustainable outcomes, Anthony aims to achieve successful project outcomes characterized by rational, cost effective structures and building fabrics that provide responsive and adaptable space. Through the role of design studio leader and major project director he will maintain an informed position to ensure design integrity at all stages of the delivery of Jemmott Associates projects.
Urban Designer - Urban Enquiry
Cathryn Chatburn is an enthusiastic and creative designer, and effective project director with a diverse portfolio of project experience gained over 23 years of practice across the United Kingdom and Australia. She has worked across a wide variety of project scales and with diverse clients. Her portfolio including significant involvement in large-scale urban regeneration, from which she has extensive experience effectively engaging professionals, stakeholders and the general public in the process of visioning and design development. Cathryn actively pursues her passion to engage people more actively in shaping the future of our urban environments as Vice President of the Brisbane Development Association, through her involvement in Brisbane Open House, specifically the Speaker Series and Children’s programme, and through her contributions to the education of Urban Design and Architecture. Until recently Cathryn led the AECOM Australia and New Zealand Master Planning and Urban Design team. Cathryn left AECOM in November 2014 to establish Urban Enquiry, her own consulting brand and commence research via a PHD part-time. Her area of research focuses on addressing the challenges of ‘Delivering the Cities of the Future’ and is drawn from experience in practice delivering large-scale master planning frameworks to guide sustainable urban change.
The awards criteria adopts the principles of Creating Places for People—an urban design protocol for Australian cities, which forms the Australian Government's approved policy for urban design. The document and more information can be accessed from the protocol's website, at the link below.

The awards categories acknowledge that good urban design can be large or small. Thinking about urban design of different scales will help Council in creating healthy, inclusive and social environments that:
- Attract business and private investment
- Provides a choice of housing, work and lifestyle options
- Facilitates creativity and innovation
- Has a strong identity and sense of place
