Identity Fraud

Identity-related fraud is a growing concern in Australia. Do not provide personal information and data to anyone unless you have reason to trust them. In particular, verify the identity of anyone claiming to be from your bank, or credit card company, or offering you the chance to receive a prize or other valuable item. You could do this by checking their address, asking someone else about them, or telephoning them back - even if they are overseas.

Crime Prevention Tip - Identify Theft

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in Australia. There are many ways to ensure that your identity is protected. Make sure your letterbox has a secure lock on it and is always locked. Your mail contains information about your identity and if stolen, can be used for identity theft. If providing personal information for competitions or surveys, make sure you feel comfortable that they can legitimately collect your details and what they do with them once they are collected. For more information visit the Queensland Police Service Identity Theft document.
