Sport & Recreation

Queensland Government's Children in Care Sports Initiative

This initiative recognises that participation in sport and recreation teaches important values and life skills including self confidence, teamwork, communication, inclusion, discipline, respect and fair play - especially important for children in care who can be vulnerable and struggle to find their way in an increasingly complex society. Funding may be used in the following ways:

  • the provision of uniforms for children in care who participate in sport and recreation activity during the life of the funding program;
  • the provision of equipment that is essential and/or compulsory for participating in an activity - such as hockey;
  • sticks, swimming caps, football boots and mouth guards;
  • participation in all sport and recreation activity by children in care including scouts, guides and cadets; and
  • participation in swimming lessons by all children in care, with no restriction to the number of lessons as long as it is within the $300 funding limit.

For more information on this funding initiative, or for guidance through the application process, please contact the Logan Central Child Safety Service Centre on 07 3380 6200.

Thinking of Starting a Sports Club?

Planning is the key to a club's health and long-term future. When forming a club, the following steps should be considered:

  • research and assess demand for the club;
  • think about how many potential members the club might have and where they will come from;
  • promote the idea of forming a club and raise awareness in the community;
  • call a public meeting;
  • set up an interim committee;
  • hold your first general meeting of the committee and potential members;
  • establish links with organisations that may be able to help you, like your local council or State Sporting Organisation;
  • consider any legal issues you may need to address before forming your club; and
  • advertise for members.

Visit the Australian Sports Commission Starting a Club web page as a guide to kick-start your club.
