2011 Mini Health and Well Being Expos in Local Primary Schools

The Every Child Counts Health and Well Being Bus along with The Early Years Initiative (QHealth) along with local services will attend local schools offering information on various Health and Well-being services on offer in the Logan area.

The vision is for 9 primary schools to be visited at school events in the next 6 months where parents are attending for approximately 2 hours.

Primary Schools to be targeted are:

  • Berrinba East
  • Woodridge
  • Woodridge North
  • Harris Fields
  • Mabel Park
  • Marsden
  • Eagleby
  • Eagleby South.

Human's New Initiative: Introducing "lowercase"

Human is proud to announce a brand new Community Engagement initiative, lowercase. "lowercase" is a youth-centered social enterprise that develops creative products and services - by and for young people.

The enterprise engages young people on behalf of the wider community to create innovative solutions to a wide range of social issues.

lowercase currently offers peer research and consultancy, creative skills workshops, technology for hire, and event production.

The POWER Program

The POWER program, a partnership between Career Keys and Mabel Park State High School is a program assisting 15-19 year old pregnant or parenting young people. It offers a crèche on site, counselling, case management and of course a range of great subjects including VET subjects. The program supports the young parents through year 10, 11 and 12 in view of enabling them to finish their senior education and to either access tertiary courses or find a suitable job.

The program is currently taking on new enrolments. If you know of anyone who could benefit from this program and who is committed to finishing their education, please contact Stephanie either by email or 3489 2332.

Girls with a Purpose

'Girls with a Purpose' is a life skill program tailed at teenage girls. Key topics include communication, goal planning, healthy relationships, sexual health, beauty, help seeking and self esteem.

Blocked... Social Networks in Youth Services

In this article, Michelle Blanchard argues that blocking access to social networking sites may reduce the risk of any of these complex issues arising, but it also eliminates the opportunity for professionals who work with 14-24 year olds to develop their understanding of the online spaces that young people occupy and to develop innovative ways of engaging their clients. She goes onto provide some tips for those who might be new to using social networking sites or looking to explore their use in engaging young people.
