Free Training - Positive Parenting Program (Triple P)

This training is to be held 13 - 16 March, 2012. Practitioners are taught how to flexibly apply the program to work with individuals, small family groups and larger groups of Indigenous people. Practitioners are also taught how to tailor program delivery ot formal, informal, urb, rural and remote consultation settings.

The Office for Early Childhood Education and Care will meet the cost of Triple P Course fees and materials. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea is also provided for both the course and accreditation.

Travel and accommodation costs will also be met for eligible staff of parenting and family support services funded by the Office.

Begin Before Birth

What happens in the womb can last a lifetime. This new online resource is for mothers, pregnant women, health professionals and students.

The website teaches about the importance of stress in pregnancy, how this can affect their well-being and what mothers can do to help manage their own stress. Mothers and fathers may also be interested in learning more about how the fetus develops, the importance of the father, family & friends during pregnancy and the effects of fetal programming on the baby and child.

Students may be interested in the science behind fetal programming and fetal development, including the evolutionary background, the importance of epigenetics and the placenta, and supporting evidence from animal models. Students may also be interested in the social implications discussed in Charlie’s story and public policy.

It is also a useful resource for Health Professionals who want to understand more about stress in pregnancy, its relationship with fetal programming and fetal development, how this may affect the baby and child, and what can be done to help.

QSMA Website: Community Page Launch!

The ‘Community’ page on the QSMA website is currently under construction to create an interactive space for community members to learn more about self-management and self-management support. Features will include basic community level information, CALD and Indigenous specific information, and a toolbox with a number of different community-centred tools to strengthen self-management. Domestic and Family Violence Awareness

The 'Act as 1' campaign is gathering community support to bring domestic and family violence out from behind closed doors. The Act as 1 message is a call to neighbours, friends, family members, work colleagues and community members to take a stand against domestic and family violence and support those affected.

Each year 15 June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Elder abuse is any act within a relationship of trust which harms an older person. As a community we can all Act as one against elder abuse by learning about common elder abuse behaviours, looking for signs of elder abuse, supporting someone experiencing abuse and getting help.

If you are experiencing elder abuse or you know someone who may be experiencing elder abuse call Lifeline's Elder Abuse Prevention Unit on 1300 651 192 (Queensland only) or 07 3250 1836 (rest of Australia) for free and confidential advice, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

Envirofund

The Envirofund is a grant program that provides funding for not-for-profit community groups and organisations to undertake projects with an energy conservation and environmental focus in their local community. To assist regional Queensland communities recover from this year's natural disasters, we are pleased to increase our total funding from $100,000 to $150,000 for 2011. Grants will be provided from as little as $200 up to a maximum of $10,000, depending on the project's size and merit. The amount of grant provided will be at Ergon Energy's discretion andmay be partial funding of the application amount. For larger grants, funding may be paid in installments. Volunteer Small Equipment Grant

This grant recognises the important role of Australia's volunteers and is part of the Government's ongoing commitment to supporting volunteers, assisting disadvantaged communities and encouraging social inclusion to assist vulnerable individuals, families and communities. Funding of $16 million is available to eligible non-profit community organisations to assist their volunteers and encourage volunteering.Volunteer Grants 2011 provides funding between $1,000 and $5,000 to help not-for-profit organisations to:

  • Purchase portable, tangible, small equipment items to help volunteers;
  • Contribute to the reimbursement of fuel costs for volunteers; and
  • Contribute to the costs of training courses and/or undertake background screening checks for volunteers.

Zero to Three's BabySteps Parenting Bulletin - Issue 27

While the first 3 years are full of joy and discovery, babies and toddlers also deal with difficult feelings and experiences. Books can be valuable tools for helping young children make sense of their own strong emotions and the challenges they may confront. To support parents and caregivers in helping young children cope at these times, Zero to Three has created a list of books appropriate for children from birth to 5 years old on a range of topics including coping with anger, dealing with fears, developing self-control, and understanding the death of a loved person or pet. Parenting and Mental Illness

SANE has released a research bulletin Parenting and Mental Illness: the early years which captures the views of this issue from people whose lives are affected. This research bulletin reveals a lack of support for mothers during pregnancy and after giving birth. The report is available on the SANE website.

Children of Parents with a Mental Illness

Children of Parents with a Mental Illness (COPMI) has established a website which provides information for family members across Australia where a parent has a mental illness and for people who care for and work with them. The website is one tool we use to deliver this information. We also work with the media, researchers, educators, service organisations, consumers, carers and others.

The COPMI initiative is being undertaken by the Australian Infant Child Adolescent and Family Mental Health Association (AICAFMHA) with funding from the Australian Government. The overall aim of the Australian COPMI initiative is to promote better mental health outcomes for children (0-18 years) of parents with a mental health problem or disorder. Visit the COPMI website.

Work for a Charity of Your Choice

Vodafone for the eightieth year is providing the opportunity for five Australians to work for a year for the charity of their choice . Vodafone will provide funds of up to $80,000 directly to the chosen charity, which consists of up to $60,000 to be used for a salary and up to $20,000 for expenses. Commonwealth Bank Relief for Not-for-Profit Community Groups

Commonwealth Bank has set aside a total of $5 million, open to not-for-profit community groups. Each not-for-profit community group who has suffered damage or loss of uninsured equipment as a result of the floods can  receive a grant up to $20,000 per group.

In true compact fashion, the Australian Tax Office is taking steps to share information which may assist organisations by providing free updates on key tax issues impacting the not-for-profit sector. The ATO website has a section dedicated to NFP's which includes:

  • Non-Profit Administrators – information and services to assist you in your role.

This website has a veritable plethora of resources around using new media or the Web 2.0 tools in the community. It hosts information and activities designed to mobilise groups to start thinking about what community is, and how to use these tools to understand and document it. A phenomenal resource produced by the Queensland Alliance for anyone engaged in community development work or collaborative practice within the community services sector. Written by the amazing Sandy Paton (ex QCOSS sector development worker in Rockhampton), it is a practical approach to helping community workers improve their skills and understand their role. It provides guidelines on ethical practice, tools and resources.
