Veterans' Families Helpline

The Veterans' Families Helpline is a confidential telephone service that provides information and referral to services that can assist veterans' families and carers who are concerned that their veteran or former serving family member is experiencing mental health issues.

The Veterans' Families Helpline is a pilot program and is available to residents in the greater Brisbane and Ipswich regions. The service is funded by the Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs and provided by Relationships Australia.

Callers who are deaf or have a hearing or speech impairment can call the Veterans' Families Helpline through the National Relay Service.

Hello Baby!

Every Tuesday 10 am to 11.30 am at KENG, 177 Meakin Road, Slacks Creek.

You are welcome to attend any or all of the following sessions focusing on the first 6 months of life:

  • Becoming a part of the family
  • Safety
  • Attachment and Bonding
  • Feeding and Nappy Care
  • Cord Care, Bathing and Dressing
  • Settling and Sleeping
  • Baby Massage
  • Stimulation and Interaction

Each of the sessions will link in directly to other programs i.e. Baby Massage, Baby Slings, Treasure Baskets and will give you access to safety packs. Access to onsite childcare for older children if required Morning Tea will be supplied.

Communities for Children (Before We Begin) will be holding these ongoing sessions for "parents to be" and "new parents".

Tax Help

Beenleigh Neighbourhood Centre (Tuesdays only) taking bookings now. Tax help volunteers are community volunteers who can assist members of the public earning less than $50k p.a. to lodge a e-tax return (electronic lodgements).

Eligibility: Maximum income of $50,000 per year. Extra $2,500 per year per dependent.

Personal tax only. No ABN numbers. Couples require a double appointment. For appointment, please ring 3287 2840.

The Council of Mayors South East Queensland Housing

The Council of Mayors as part of the Liveable Compact Cities Project have established an online discussion forum to gather views on housing options and affordability in South East Queensland. Community members are invited to participate in the online discussion relating to future housing demands and trends. The discussion forum can be accessed at seqhousing.seqmayors.qld.gov.au

MoneySmart is for all Australians – young or old, rich or poor, investing or paying off debt. The MoneySmart website offers free, independent guidance so people can make the best choices for their money.

No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS)

Canefields Clubhouse offers the pilot program - No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) to people within the Logan community with a diagnosed mental illness, their family and carers, the opportunity to borrow up to $1,200 for essential items such as fridges, computers, mobile phones, televisions, etc. The best part of all is that there is no interest.

There are a few basic criteria, and the item must be in brand new condition. NILS does not pay for bills such as car registrations. Payments are made directly through Centrepay and are so small you hardly even notice them coming out each fortnight.

The Reading Bug

Would you like the reading bug to visit your school, early childhood service, playgroup or community event? The purpose of the Reading Bug is to engage children and families in the love of reading, talking, singing and playing with children. GIVIT is a free service that is looking for charities in your area that work with impoverished, vulnerable and marginalised people.

Through GIVIT your service can request any item or service for your clients, that you are unable to provide. You can also access the Virtual Warehouse which has a long list of donations available to your clients including clothes, fridges and washing machines.

GIVIT will be launching in Queensland in February, but we ask that you contact GIVIT, or myself with your details (email and telephone number) so that you can be contacted in 2011 (and register on the new national website). Visit www.givit.org.au for more information.

Depression Support Group

The New Horizons Depression Support Group meets at Caddies in South Street, Jimboomba every Tuesday from 9.30 am until 11.30am (except during school holidays).

No referral is necessary to join this group so just come along and enjoy morning tea with friends. Our venue provides a safe, friendly and confidential setting where our members receive support and information. Members offer each other support and understanding; however, we also have a few laughs!

Come along and join us - Laughter is the Best Medicine! (Our members have a great sense of humour!)

Council Cabs

Logan City Council is offering local aged pensioners a community scheme to provide them with greater independence.

The Council Cab service enables you (and your carer) to travel once a week from home to your nearest major shopping centre, for only $2 per person each way.

The initiative is subsidised by Logan City Council, with Yellow Cabs providing the service. Simply call 13 62 94 and ask for a Logan Council Cab.

Out Patient Counselling

The In-House Project offers a free and confidential service working with you towards achieving your goals to change. The primary focus of the In-House Project is to empower clients to establish control over their lives through emphasising individual's values, personal decision-making and goal setting.

The philosophy underlying the In-House Project is one of harm reduction and holistic well being. While drug use is the primary issue, we recognise that people are made up of many things, all of which need to be considered for positive life change. Gambling Help Online

A new online gambling counselling service will provide support and advice to gamblers and their families across Australia.

Gambling Help Online was an initiative of the Ministerial Council on Gambling (MCG), funded through an agreement between the Rudd Government and State and Territory Governments. The free service will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

HIPPY Comes to Logan

HIPPY is a home-based early childhood enrichment program for families who have children 3 and half to 4 years of age. HIPPY is free to families and is run during term time only. HIPPY helps parents learn many things. HIPPY helps children by preparing them for school, building their self-esteem and confidence in learning. Families taking part in HIPPY recieve a set of activity packs and books designed to help their child's learning.
