World Environment Day
World Environment Day Poster Competition
Between January and June every year Logan City Council hosts a primary school poster competition in celebration of World Environment Day (which is held on 5 June every year). Logan City Council's 2012 World Environment Day poster competition is now open.
Primary schools are encouraged to participate in the competition and have students create an A3 poster relating to the World Environment Day's theme, "Green Economy: Does it include you?". Primary Schools are then responsible for posting or delivering their 5 best entries from each grade level to Council.
See the World Environment Day Poster Competition Fact Sheet (PDF 531 KB) for further information.
Entries will be judged by Council and the following winning categories and prizes awarded:
- 13 Overall Winners which will feature in the 2013 World Environment Day Calendar (available FREE from Council in late 2012) and will each receive a cash prize, certificate and prize bag;
- 15 Highly Commended winners which will each receive a certificate and prize bag; and
- All registered participants will receive a prize.
Overall and Highly Commended winners are presented with their prizes at an award presentation ceremony held at Logan City Council's annual environmental event, LEAF (Logan Eco Action Festival) on Sunday 3 June. All Overall and Highly Commended winning posters will also be displayed at LEAF and the Logan Art Gallery.

World Environment Day
World Environment Day is an international celebration commemorated every year on 5 June to recognise the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment at Stockholm in 1972.
The purpose of this conference was to formulate 'A Global Agenda for Change'. It envisioned and promoted the notion of Sustainable Development - to ensure that development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
The day's agenda is to:
- Give a human face to environmental issues;
- Empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;
- Promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and
- Advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
The 2012 World Environment Day theme is: "Green Economy: Does it Include You?".
Logan Eco Action Festival (LEAF)
Council will also be celebrating World Environment Day this year by holding the annual Logan Eco Action Festival (LEAF) on Sunday 3 June. After last year's hugely successful and fun day out, LEAF is on again and promises to be bigger and better.
See Logan Eco Action Festival for further details.
