Council promotes responsible pet ownership.  This requires a collaborative approach including educating owners about State Legislation and Local Laws specific to the keeping of animals.  Most pet owners don't realise that it is a State requirement to microchip their cat or dog if born on or after 1 July 2009.

Not only is microchipping your pet the most effective way to identify it if it gets lost or caught wandering, in accorandance with the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008, owners must ensure their cat or dog is implanted with a microchip by 12 weeks of age.

Owners should note that a microchip is a separate identification device to a registration or name tag and does not preclude them from registering their animal.  There are currently six (6) microchip registry's Australia wide.  Identifying which registry your pet is microchipped with is simple.

  1. Visit the Animal Management Centre, 213 Queens Road, Kingston with your pet and have it microchip scanned.  The Officer will supply you with the microchip number and registry details for your pet; or
  2. Visit your local vet who will perform a microchip scan.

If your pet is not currently microchipped, take advantage of one of Council's microchip promotions:
