Beenleigh Inner Ring Road

Council intends to construct the Beenleigh inner ring road.

The first stage is upgrading the intersection of James Street and Zander Street. Stage 1 has now been completed (July 2010).

Council and the Beenleigh Show Society have reached an agreement on the next stage of the project, which continues Zander Street to meet up with Alamein Steet through the showgrounds. This second stage is subject to funding in future years. Initially it is proposed to construct two lanes of the 'missing link', with the additional lanes to be constructed at a later date and as funding becomes available.

Plans

Land

Council will look to acquire an area of 16,832 square metres from the Beenleigh Show Society from a total land area of 137,547 square metres.

Traffic during the annual show

Council has agreed to close this section of the inner ring road during the annual Beenleigh Show.

Parking and local planning

Council will address parking as part of its local planning and the planning scheme for Beenleigh. Refer to the Beenleigh Local Plan.

Beenleigh has been earmarked to continue its role as an important social, community and business centre for the region. A local plan is the first step in ensuring Beenleigh develops within a planned framework. Council needs feedback from business and community stakeholders so it can refine its planning and produce a final local plan. A range of forums are proposed to get the message out, with displays at local shops and the library.

The local plan will cover:

  • Land use and scale of development such as density, height, housing mix
  • Access and movement such as roads, pathways, car parking, connectivity and public transport
  • Urban design, e.g. open spaces, streetscapes, buildings and public art
  • Environment, for instance, views, noise, air quality, vegetation, and natural values
  • Social and community issues like government facilities and services, and affordability
  • Infrastructure, such as community facilities, sewer, water and drainage.

Background

Gold Coast City Council proposed an inner ring road connecting Alamein Street to Zander Street to manage traffic within Beenleigh. The inner ring road was mooted for many years and identified in Gold Coast Council's 1997 Beenleigh Local Plan.

Construction of the road through the showgrounds is designed to improve Beenleigh's traffic flow and to create a more attractive and pedestrian-friendly town centre.

Beenleigh's road network is based around two 'ring roads', an outer ring road to distribute vehicles around Beenleigh, and an inner ring road to circulate traffic within the town centre. The aim is to lessen traffic congestion in the middle of town.
