Edwards Bridge
Council has imposed a 15 tonne load limit on Edwards Bridge and constructed a temporary alternative road route for heavy vehicles between Thornbill Drive and Bellbird Drive. This was opened to traffic on Friday 18 June 2010.
Edwards Bridge was closed to heavy vehicles over 15 tonnes due to concerns about its structural soundness. A sketch of the new road is attached. This alternative route can be used in the interim so that local property can continue to receive deliveries of heavy goods and so that local residents with heavy vehicles can still drive through the area.
Council is now planning for the replacement of Edwards Bridge. Investigations have shown that Edwards Bridge cannot safely carry heavy vehicles over 15 tonnes. Any truck with two axles can continue to use the bridge as long as they are not overloaded. Council has liaised with fire and bus services and confirmed that fire vehicles and school buses are light enough to comply with the load limit and can continue to safely use Edwards Bridge.
Please be advised:
- Fortnightly safety inspections of Edwards Bridge show that no unexpected structural defects or further visible deterioriation has been identified.
- The Queensland Police Service Logan District Traffic Branch has implemented patrols of Edwards Bridge on a regular basis to ensure compliance with the imposed 15 tonne load limit. They report that no enforcement action has been taken to date.
- Council has completed the survey work for preliminary design for a new bridge. This includes finding an alginment that does not require land acquisitions. This should avoid delays to the delivery of the proposed replacement bridge.
- The next step is to conduct the detailed design of the bridge and associated intersection upgrade of Goodna Road and Ison Road. As this detailed design progresses, Council has commenced negotiations with suitable construction contractors. When details of construction timings become known, they will also be advised.
Council understands that the load limit and rerouting of heavy vehicle traffic through the new link will cause some disruption to residents and road users and Council apologises for the inconvenience caused. Signs are in place advising of the new load limit on Edwards Bridge.
